Redrew the previous picture a few days ago. I lost the psd file and file recovery couldn't recover it, unfortunately. So I won't be finishing this. That's okay though, I'll just do something bigger and better in the future to render this picture obsolete. OH HOHO.

I did some work in class today that I didn't hate or keep trying to redo! Three one-hour poses before we stopped to review thumbnail sketches for the next big painting. I'll be doing another dragon piece, but this time it'll be about Sleeping Beauty. (There was a misunderstanding, the dragon is the sleeping beauty.) Anyway, here's one of the life paintings I did today:

This was for my Digital Life class, but I used the same story: Hans Christian Anderson's "The Snow Queen", but this time instead of a style reference, I gave the story very oriental elements and then kicked it into the air for a more Laputa-esque feel to it. There's still lots of things I need to learn about digital painting. I presented a less finished/refined version yesterday for class critique and they tore me a new one. HAHA. I'd love to work more on this some day when my skills have improved, but I have new assignments to do and things like that. Everything's a learning process! I'll keep getting better!

I ended up asking my digital life teacher for some crit on this piece, and he completely transformed it. SO I went back to it and tried to do what he showed me and this is what I'll be turning in tomorrow.

The assignment was to find an artist (who is better than you), and emulate their style. Pick a story and a scene, and draw an environment in that artist's style, then paint it. I picked Yoshitaka Amano as my artist, and Hans Christian Anderson's "The Snow Queen" as my story. The painting style isn't done in Amano's style, but Lou said it was okay, I think.

This went through a process of thumbnail sketches, refined sketch, and then painted in photoshop directly onto the sketch. I asked Lou his opinion yesterday, and he gave me some crit which I've followed. I'll be bringing my computer in next week so he can show me first hand if there are any other issues he sees in it when I turn in the final print. Sorry about that ugly watermark. It's the internet, and all that.

Ahh, I still don't know a lot of things but I think I'm slowly getting better. The homework for this week was to do a master study of a traditional painting digitally. I chose to do J.C. Leyendecker's "Football Player: Drop Kicker" oil painting. I don't exactly have it where I want it, but I'm at a point where now I seem to be ruining it the more I work on it. So I will stop here and go to class and see how things go.

Calibrating my monitor to the printer is a total pain. Agh.

Dude, I'm back in school! I'm a fourth term student now, whooo... Anyway, I'm gonna work on my digital art skills this term (as well as a million other things), so um, here's one of my first tries in my Digital Life class. It's all done on one layer, and it was using a still life set-up, so unfortunately I couldn't easily finish it after class ended. Still learning lots of things, I'll do better next time!

You know you've been working for way too long without break when your fingers have water blisters on them. What. I'm painting the background right now and then I need to do all my write-ups, etc. Almost there~!

It's been a while since I last posted here. It's now finals week, and I have a lot of work to finish so maybe when things are over I'll have more things to post. Last time I posted it was a work in progress of the human skeleton. That was completed by week 6, I'll take a picture of it after school is over and post it here in a few days. We started the final project half way through the term, which was to design a creature out of our imagination completely with skeleton, environment, etc. Here's a work in progress of my creature skeleton from Imaginatomy class. The painting is only a base coat so I need to cover it again, and there is the diarama to complete, as well as other final presentation touches, etc. There is a lot of work to do by this Friday.

I have a few repairs that need to be made to the bent leg on the other side as well and some more materials to buy.

I think blogger needs to get a better image uploading system. Theirs sucks. Inventive Drawing is plenty of fun. Our first homework assignment (week2) was to draw Thumper thirty times in various fun poses. I was somewhat brain dead when I was doing it, and so I chose classic character poses from various sources, mostly Japanese animation. It was actually quite funny, and Will laughed.

And I find I'm not an amazingly talented sculptor. This will need work. The pelvis still needs to be fixed as some point, and...everything else as well. But here's some progress photos. Need to finish sculpting all of the legs before next week as homework.

Hey, it's a new term and I have new classes. Keeping a blog is somewhat more difficult than I thought it would be, I keep forgetting this place and I keep forgetting to take photos of my work.

Homework that's still being worked on. I'll take more photos later when I'm done. Gotta finish it by tomorrow morning...class at 8 sucks. Even though I love the class, 8am classes are painful to get to.

sp08: wk9 design process 1: space

Design Process 1: Space is an IDF course I'm taking. It's the second section to Design Process 1 and involves a lot of model building. I actually ended up in this class unintentionally, and while I usually love to do models and such, this takes a lot of time that I unfortunately don't have. (I also don't have a lot of the model shop/laser cutting knowledge that my classmates do, so I feel like a total n00b next to them.)

The class started week 8, and we had a group project. I'll have to get photos of those from my group members, I don't have any on me. But the next week we had to do an individual project to redesign a retail store. I didn't actually do much redesigning, but I built the model.

Sort of, it's really ghetto compared to my classmates' who mostly used the model shop and the laser room and such. Ah, I feel like such a n00b.

unfortunately, I wasn't the one who built the models surrounding the Apple store. There's a lot I can learn from my peers, aha.

I did well this week. It was extremely...shocking, but it made me happy like nothing else. Funny how a bit of praise after weeks of none makes your day.

I'm...not doing very well with the oil paints. This isn't a comprehension issue, it's an application issue. I understand what Deni is saying and everything, it's just not happening on the canvas for me. It's been pretty frustrating.

This is from two weeks ago, week 4 classwork:

I tried to keep everything cleaner this time! I almost succeeded! Mostly work with 5 value tones this time, which is...not extremely easy for me to grasp at this point in time.

I got a big "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG" when I put this one up for critique during class. I find more organization on my palette to be necessary, or I forget which tone is which one. Trying to cover wet oil paints just asks for a gross and inaccurate smear of the tones.

I find I don't like the way things look after I add in that gray-ish brown. I prefer just the wipe-out. We're getting into color soon, I think.

I've found that oils are incredibly difficult (and messy) to clean.

I never got around to scanning stuff from term 1. Ah well, when I do finally get around to it, I guess things are going to be horribly out of order. I had my first two classes for this term yesterday: Composition and Painting, and Viscom Fundamentals 1.

Today's my last day of classes for the Fall 2007 semester. It was also the last day of my Design 1 class - our assignment for today was to complete the book project. The idea is supposed to take your eye across the pages, in a study of continuity. I hadn't started the book project prior to class, so I threw this together during the 3 or so hours we had to work, and tried to create a continuous landscape throughout the pages. It's a bit difficult to recreate my book through scanning, so I hope the photograph and the scans will be good enough to create the same effect.

The paper is bristol vellum, size 14x17 and ripped into 1/8 size pieces. Everything was drawn freehand with HB pencil.

This post is out of order, as the rest of my work from this term hasn't been scanned or photographed yet.
This piece has also been labeled work-in-progress; when I have a bit of time I'll do a light digital wash of the piece and give it a bit of color.

beginning: entrance portfolio

This is my entrance portfolio to a number of different art schools. Not all of them were included in each portfolio; for the sake of simplicity, let's say this was my entrance portfolio into art center. :) For some of these, it was the first time I'd used the medium. For the rest of them, it was the first few times after that I'd used the medium. Practice portfolio?

'sup guys, I got a blog like all the other cool kids on the block. :) I'll be using this thing to track my progress across my duration at Art Center - like a PROCESS BOOK TO SUCCESS. Ahem, anyway, my first term here is almost over, so I'll start scanning and photographing after I skip out of this city and go back home. You guys can have my entrance portfolio first.
